Calling Your Black Assistant “Mammy” Is Probably Not the Best Idea

Golden Beach, Florida town manager Bonilyn Wilbanks-Free resigned Tuesday night, after an investigation initiated by town officials concluded that she had called assistant town manager Barbara Tarasenko a “mammy”, and then continued to dig her grave deeper by expressing much admiration for Aunt Jemima.
Wilbanks-Free, who is white, reportedly called Tarasenko, who is black, a ”mammy” in front of two department heads in October. Wilbanks-Free tried to explain it away as a simple slip of the tongue, as she referred to town employees as “ma’am” or “missy”, and accidentally combined the two, coming up with “mammy”.
The resulting investigation also produced the following gem, as reported in at MiamiHerald.com:
‘I mentioned that `mammy’ was an endearing term, and that Aunt Jemima, who I know was a mammy and is still, to this day, on the pancake box,” Wilbanks-Free said.
Err, sorry, Bonilyn, that doesn’t quite make it better. It’s very observant of you to notice that Aunt Jemima is still on the pancake box, but that doesn’t exactly translate into the right to call black employees of yours “mammy”.
