Street Sweeper Stealer
March 8th, 2007 by Wacky Waldo
Almost every small town in the northern Midwest has a tall tale about someone who stole a zamboni machine and drove it home or took it out to the local drive in, just for fun you know. But a street sweeper?
According to the AP, Jeffrey Strom of Boulder, Colorado, was picked up yesterday after stealing a street sweeper and taking it for a joy ride. The 29-year old allegedly swiped the city street cleaning machine while it was parked at an intersection. Street sweeper Callie Hayden left the machine unattended, presenting Strom with the perfect opportunity to live out his bestest Cheers fantasy. (I have to wonder why a city employee left their street sweeper parked somewhere in the city, though.)
Strom has been charged with drunk driving and careless driving, as well as aggravated motor theft. Apparently he told police he did drive the machine away, but said he “didn’t plan on stealing it.” I don’t know, but once you drive away in something that’s not yours, haven’t you in fact stolen it?
